Originally written in 1845, the final 28 bars were rewritten at an unknown later date. William Smialek’s thesis contains a wealth of information about the Symphonie Militaire. It also contains the most up-to-date edition of the piece. This is an invaluable document for anyone wishing to perform this accessible, historic symphony. His subsequent article on the piece offers a good introduction to this work
