Symphony for Wind Ensemble is a reworking of an earlier piano sonata. It is dedicated to the composer’s former teacher, Vincent Persichetti, and was written in 1985 at David Waybright’s request. “Though the title suggests that this symphony should be performed by a smaller wind ensemble, my concept is really for a large symphonic band. The additional instruments help to project the powerfulness and the overall excitement that I wish to convey in this work.”
